After leaving the kids in Rocklin on Sunday, Jan. 2, we spent the evening having dinner in Richmond with long-time friends Jer and Sue Duda. It was Sue’s birthday and she kindly let us join the family dinner celebration. After a fun evening (Sue and I even squeezed in a game of “Nuts”) we left the next morning for BART, then caught the plane in SFO and were back on the boat by 5pm.
We had no time to mope around being depressed though. My sister, Peg, made plans to come spend about 10 days with us starting the following Sunday. So we cleaned up the boat and provisioned. We had a ball with Peg. She had visited in July last year and died in the heat and humidity. This time of year in Mexico is delightful. It barely hits 80 degrees during the day, absolutely no rain and a cool 60 at night.
We did the usual tourist things; a walk through the Mayan hotel complex, sunset walks on the beach, tour the Malecon in Puerto Vallarta (where Peg treated us to a wonderful lunch and she found some great buys), the Friday night trip to Pitillo (and Baileys crepes again!), dinghy trip down the canal (saw the big crocodile!), a LONG walk to the small zoo and through the golf course, banana splits at the Yacht Club, rides on the free trolley, and a fun sail on Banderas Bay (saw lots of whales!!!).
We did try to geocache. We had 3 sites and tried them all without success. Oh well. Got some good games of “64” in and really had a good time. Peg discovered the jamaica drink, a tea made from hibiscus flowers and we ate at a real classy restaurant in Jarretaderas (we called it the “blue tent restaurant”). We encouraged her to stay more than a week and she left on Tuesday, Jan. 11 with plans to return again before it gets hot again.
After she left, we had a chance to get to know Rich and Barb Harper better. Besides answering our myriad questions, we had fun hitting some local restaurants, playing card games, and having a day on the bay with their daughter and her family. Barb planned a fun afternoon pedicure in Jarretaderas for the two of us and we had a great afternoon together…but the pedicurist never showed up. They also joined us for the acrobatic show that came by the marina. A French couple with 2 small children is working their way around the world on a sailboat. They do performances in exchange for a marina slip. Admittance is free, but they pass the hat. They did 2 shows; the 5pm show was a comedy show and the 7pm show was a serious, sensuous show. Both were absolutely top class and professional. We actually watched the marina show AND the yacht club show the next night.
Jim (Toothpick) returned to NV this week and Ellen joins him the first week of February. Bob and Judy Lyon also returned and we all got together for a game of “64” and a run to Costco. We had quite a few folks inquire about NEOS this month as well. We took one couple (Russ and Ruth) our on the bay for our day with Peg. We gave tours of the boat about 4 times to tourists that happened to walk by and asked us about her. We have terminated our contract with the local broker here and signed up with The Multihull Company in Seattle. So Neos continues to be for sale as we plan our next journey northwards.
When we weren’t socializing, we were checking off items on the project list. Rog changed oil and filters, pencil zincs, finished the new hatch cover, replaced the bulbs in the mast lights, and switched batteries around a bit. The parts we have been trying to get from Lombardini are actually on their way and the radio that has been broken since December is at the repair shop in Puerto Vallarta. The boat is clean inside and out and we have a gallon of epoxy paint to do some touchup on the deck. I got a lot of internet business done and filled all of the rain barrels and solar bags with water. We pull out Feb 1 before breakfast and join the huge armada at anchor off of La Cruz.
