About Me

Rog and Sue Lloyd sold their home in Meadow Vista, CA in July, 2005 and enjoyed life aboard their catamaran NEOS for eight years. They sailed the 48 foot catamaran throughout the Caribbean, through the Panama Canal and on the Pacific Coast from Ecuador to Mexico. Neos was sold in July of 2013 and Rog and Sue returned to life on land. They are now settled in Rocklin, CA close to family and contemplating how they will spend their future as CLODs; cruisers living on dirt.

NEOS LOG
September, 2013

We started the month off with a day in Old Sacramento with Max. It was a spontaneous date…totally unplanned. But Old Town was celebrating Gold Rush Days and we decided to head down at the last minute. The city lays dirt down on all of the streets and they have re-enactments of Pony Express rides, cannon firings, crafts, and even a fire call to save the local brothel. And you can’t go to Old Town with Max without a visit to the Toy Store where he spent his pennies on a few more plastic animals. We had Subway sandwiches for lunch and watched the street action for a while before heading back home. Fun day!

Michelle had a friend come to her house to cut her hair and I took advantage of the opportunity and had a few inches lobbed off. Now that I am on land, it is easier to actually have a STYLE instead of always pulling my hair back and out of the wind. Of course, then I needed to buy some hot rollers and a curling iron. Ah, civilization!
The next 2 action items we are working on are RV/van shopping and deciding what we will do for future living arrangements. We attended the Sacramento RV show down at Cal Expo and saw hundreds of RV options. We left with lots of info, but are as confused as ever with more choices now than we had originally. As for future living options, we have a realtor looking for property and/or homes for under $200K. We spent a few days roaming the county looking at available properties. We are amazed at some of the gorgeous homes built into hidden spots in the country. We saw quite a few gorgeous pieces of property, but now as we get into these “golden” years, we find it is wiser to stay closer to town. So the search continues. Most of the fixer-upper homes are in questionable parts of town. It isn’t worth fixing up a house if it is in a dilapidated area. We even attended a bank auction for foreclosed homes. I am sure this was a great option a couple of years ago when there were numerous foreclosures. But Placer county is actually having a resurgence and home prices are rising, not falling. Figgers…when we are back and ready to buy!

We are both still in awe at the proximity of stores and parks. Since we had some windy days this month, Rog took the opportunity to do some kite flying. We spent over an hour at the local park and he had a ball. So nice to be able to do that whenever you want!
Our third table from Overstock arrived and we finally have a coffee table with no scratches. The couch was delivered on a Saturday night at about 6pm and I love it. It fits perfectly and is so comfortable! I have never had a lounge chair before and we splurged and got the power version. It is easy to adjust and has stops anywhere from full recline to slight foot raising. Happy camper.
My niece and her husband, Jennie and Nelson, stopped for an overnight on their way down to LA. They finished their backpack tour of Southeast Asia, had stopped at my sister Laur’s house to repack and are now heading to Spain for Jennie’s master’s program. It was the first time we had met Jennie’s husband and we had such a great visit! Michelle was able to stop by with the kids for a quick visit as well. We wish the newlyweds much luck as they head off on their newest adventure.

Max needed a little motivation to take his Monday spelling pretest a bit more seriously, so now he gets to come over after school if he gets 100% on his pretest. He gets out of school an hour early on Mondays so it gives him a couple of hours of available playtime. Originally, it was a swimming opportunity and as the days got cooler (and the pool got pretty cold) we decided to make his visits more exciting. We plan projects and now have a special activity every time they come on Mondays. This month, we made jack-o-lanterns with vampire teeth using those little 3 inch high pumpkins. And we made crazy mouths out of apple slices, peanut butter, and small marshmallows. We have quite a few more projects planned and now really look forward to our Mondays. Max, meanwhile, has consistently scored 100% on his pretests every week.

Liz and Dave Honeycutt met us in Old Town Auburn for dinner and it felt like we just picked up where we left off 8 years ago. We also had a fabulous dinner at the Nordstrum’s followed by a really lousy game of cards!
The weather is still absolutely gorgeous and we are still pinching ourselves to make sure we are living in reality.
