We spent the first week of April finishing up the family room, kitchen and master bedroom ceilings. Rog taped and “mudded” then we tried out the new texture machine powered by Eric’s compressor. I was in charge of mixing up the texturing material while Rog manned the machine. Even with a few bumps in the road (quick trip to Home Depot for more material, one lumpy batch, and a clog in the trigger) it actually went pretty smoothly and looked great. Once dry, we pulled out the paint sprayer and Rog put a layer of paint on. The next day, the ceiling looked pretty streaky so Rog pulled out the roller and did another coat by hand.
With the ceilings done, I focused on finishing up the master bedroom and Rog got started on cabinets for the kitchen. I had planned to use chalk paint and do some distressing on the wainscoting, but gave up on it and settled for regular paint. I just didn’t see much difference in the paint finish and distressing it just made it look like half painted wood. The finished room looked pretty snazzy with 2 different greens separated by white trim. I used Ryan’s carpet shampooer and the room is done and ready for move in.
I convinced Rog to let me paint the white refrigerator that we inherited with the house. We are planning on smoky blue cabinets and all of the other appliances are black, so the fridge HAD to be black as well. It took a full day to clean the fridge thoroughly….looks brand new now! I used 5 cans of Rustoleum appliance paint and then let it set for almost 2 weeks before we touched it. The weekend before we moved in, I tiled the floor where it was going to be installed. Rog hooked it up and turned it on. It looks pretty cool if I do say so myself!
I then tried to help Rog out by attacking the bar unit that he will be replacing. I spent a full morning and got about 25% of the tile removed. Rog took pity on me and we worked together and got the entire unit removed that afternoon. That means no sink in the kitchen, so we are using the sink in the garage. I am still able to use the old stove/oven and all of the kitchen supplies and food are in boxes on the floor. I will reuse some of the cabinets from the bar for the project room and I hauled the rest of the wood/tile out to the driveway.
April 26 was “community clean up day” in Rocklin and they allow free dump services at a few locations. Pretty timely for us. We rented a trailer on a rainy day that cleared up just in time for us to fill it up, then it started to pour again. We drove the trailer over to the Bloom residence where Eric added his contributions. Then Eric and Rog headed to the dump drop off at 8am the next morning and got the job done before the crowds. Then they took the trailer over to ReStore to pick up some specialty hard wood that we bought for the bar countertop and tile that we had bought for the dinette. There were 8 pieces of 12 foot long Iroko African Teak of varying widths that sold as “all or none”. Ryan met them back at our new house to unload and stack the wood by the side of the house.
Rog was happy to be working with wood and made a few more purchases. He now has a dust collector, router with fence, edge sander and miter saw. He says he is just about done with tool purchases. We will see. It took over a week for his first cabinet, and one day for the next one. By the end of the month, I had one wall of cabinets. No drawers or doors, but happy to see the progress. Again, we tried chalk paint and just didn’t care for it so ended up using Behr Ultra. I am the painter and am trying to stay ahead of Rog and paint the inside and outside of the cabinets before he installs them.
I had enough time to clear out the dining room and paint 2 of the walls so that we wouldn’t have to move the hutch after the move. I shampooed the rug and it is now ready for move in.
We have been hauling a few boxes to the new place every day this month and on move day (Monday, April 28), we still had enough boxes to fill the truck bed and the car. Rog loaded them up and then headed off to the house to continue the kitchen project. At 8am, the movers arrived for the furniture. By 9:30 we were at the house and they not only unloaded the truck, but brought in all of the boxes from the truck and car. I spent the next day back at the apartment, cleaning it for final walk through. We are now officially moved in. Our first night in the new place, our neighbor saw someone in the house and came over to check things out. Nice to know that our neighbors are watching our place!
The month was not all work and no play. I finally went a step further and now have shorter hair…ear length. I love it. We also had Easter dinner at our apartment and had the Blooms join us. They had just returned from a week in San Diego and it was fun to hear all about it.
We headed up to Auburn for the Lions’ Charter Night dinner. Good to see a bunch of old friends. And I do mean old. The club has aged considerably with very little influx of young blood. And we had dinner with the Blooms at a school fund raiser at Chipolte’s.
And the month ends with us in our new home and no more commuting! Our four months of work have enabled us to make the place our own and we really like it. Even with all of the projects left to do.
