Weather-wise, we had a pretty nice month. July had quite a few days over 100 degrees but we only had about 2 during August. Most days were in the 80’s. Pretty nice!
Again, the focus was on the kitchen as Rog made drawer fronts and cabinet doors and I painted them. We bought some stainless rod and made our own hardware, using the same Iroko wood we used for countertops. Rog fashioned 100 ends, then I stained and finished them. We really like the end result. By mid August, the big guy was ready to move on to the next project and I was able to dabble in the kitchen more. We are delighted with the way it worked out and it is easy to cook in….what a joy! Rog says all you have to do is deprive your wife of a working kitchen for a few months and anything would be nice.
The family/living room used to have a huge fireplace with an insert that took up a corner of the room. It was one of the first things to get torn out. Rog designed an alcove for the new pellet stove we want which meant removing the 6 foot wide window and punching out the wall a couple of feet. By the end of the month, it was weathered in and ready for the stove. Once we buy the stove, he can determine the location of the vent and flue and we can finish the inside.
I started on the patio furniture and painted the table top and chairs. I made the fabric inserts ¼” wider this time to make it easier to assemble but was not at all happy with the end product. When I went back to take out the ¼”, my sewing machine decided to act up. So that project is on hold until I get it back from my repair shop.
Monday projects with the kids continue. This month, we made oyster cookies, octopus plates, unicorns and a string bowl. Michelle started school at the end of the month, a week before the kids return to school, so we spent a morning at the park as well.
Topping the month off was Karissa’s birthday celebration at Folsom Lake. Eric surprised me and had the ski boat in working condition and back in the water. He let me take it for a spin. What a blast! The Nautique is like a member of our family and holds so many good memories. Not only was it nice to be back on the water, but driving the Nautique was frosting on the cake. We had a wonderfully relaxing day enjoying the nice weather and family.
Then we joined Michelle and the kids for some ice skating. Michelle was a natural..her first time skating and she did pretty doggone good! Meanwhile, I hugged the edge while Rog took off. The kids pushed buckets in front of them to provide balance. They had a ball and are already looking forward to going back.
Ryan and Beth had their annual camping trip to Rollins so we babysat Princess Zeke for a couple of days. She is an easy dog to take care of but was so excited to see Beth again on Sunday!!
The neighbors had a get together for the two newbies on the block. It was nice to meet everyone and we feel incredibly lucky to have such a great group of neighbors.
We ended the month with Karissa’s date. We started with lunch at “the pancake place” (IHOP) and then went to the park. Then she wanted to see a princess movie and since there aren’t any currently playing, we did one on our TV; “Ella Enchanted”. It was a fun day.
We have now been back on land for over a year and daily thank our lucky stars for being back with family and are thoroughly enjoying the kids/ grandkids/ the remodel and life in general. Life is good.
