NEOS LOG
September, 2015
We recuperated from our road trip, the grandkids (and daughter!) are back in school, and we are back in the swing of our daily routine. We work until 10am, stop for a nut/seed snack break followed at 10:30 with half an hour of yoga and stretching. Then another hour of work before lunch. A couple of hours of work after lunch until 3pm. Not a bad work day, eh?
Back to routine also meant resuming doctor appointments. The cardiologist heard no murmurs or congestion and set me up for another Echo in October. The eye doc was unable to open my clogged tear ducts and set me up with a surgeon to do it next month. We had blood work done by our general MDs and spent a couple of hours poring over the results. Amazing to me that blood work now also includes genetic testing. Heady stuff. The docs recommended the Mediterranean diet and some supplemental vitamin/mineral pills.
The house project for the month was to replace gutters. This also meant repainting the house since that is easier done before the new gutters go up. By the end of the month, we had settled on colors and had the back of the house repainted and gutters up. Most of this work is Rog so in my downtime, I focused on the back yard. I researched the plants and decided on sticking primarily with UC Davis All Star plants. These plants make the list by being hardy, require little watering, are attractive to beneficial insects, and look good the entire year. We took a little field trip to the arboretum on their campus and actually looked at each plant, rejecting the ones we didn’t like and adding others that caught our eye. When we got home, I drew a preliminary sketch and drew up our shopping list. We will return to UC Davis October 10 for their annual plant sale. And so we pray for a wet winter and an end to the drought.
We met up with some old friends this month. Hawkinsons brought dinner and some goodies from their vegetable garden. We spent a delightful morning chatting with the Manns about cruising in the Virgin Islands helping them prepare for their Fall vacation. Mid month, Nordstrums hosted a dinner for Barb Harper who was visiting from Wisconsin. Of course, this also included a game of 64. At the end of the month, two old friends from Placer Speech and Hearing days found me and we had lunch together at The Four Sisters. So good to get reacquainted.
Michelle and Eric celebrated their 10th anniversary with a special weekend trip to Monterey. The grandkids spent Sat and Sun at our place. On Saturday, we spent the morning at Rocklin’s Cool Cars and Hot Chili. There were loads of booths and activities and we were ready for a lunch and rest back home. In the afternoon, we went to Bass Pro Outdoor World. The kids climbed into every boat and ATV. We must have spent 3 hours there. That first night we slept in a tent in the backyard after a hot dog campfire, complete with s’mores. Sunday morning I had to run up to see Jim for a dental checkup so Pops made castles with the kids using blocks of wood. When I got back, we went for a walk in the park to do Karissa’s homework: a sensory scavenger hunt. After lunch, we watched Harry Potter’s 4th movie, Prisoner of Azkaban. I don’t think Michelle will forgive me for letting Karissa see that movie. Blew it again. On Monday, it was up to us to get the kids to school on time, complete with lunches and snacks, then pick them up after school and get Max to track practice. We had dinner and put everything away and were ready for Michelle and Eric when they got home about 6pm. Great weekend!!
September was Karissa’s date month. We took her to Sunsplash for a game of miniature golf and then played in the arcade where she earned enough points to pick out 4 or 5 great prizes. For dinner, she chose her favorite restaurant, Black Bear Diner. We also went to Max’s Boy Scout pancake breakfast at Rocklin’s Patriot Day. And Max picked the perfect sport...Track. We go to his races and he typically is with the second group to hit the track. Then we leave. No all morning games, no tournaments. Nice! And he is continuing to improve his time and placement so he is happy.
All in all, a busy month….guess we are truly back from vacation.
