Rain, snow, floods...the end of the drought. Some pretty heavy storms left 12 feet of snow in the Sierras and up to 20 inches of rain in some parts of CA. We were fine here, lots of mud and twigs all over the front yard but no damage. By the end of the month, we were able to clean up both yards, do the required pruning and weeding. Ready for the next storm in February.
We were able to touch bases with friends and family during all of the wet weather. We met my sister Laura and her daughter Jennie for lunch in Elk Grove. Jennie is visiting from London where she has decided to make her home for a while as she starts another branch of her career. The following week we met an old friend, Danny Martinez, for lunch at Awful Annie’s in Lincoln. His wife died last November and it has been difficult for him,, but he is doing pretty good. And we met up with the Hawkinsons for a hike at the Auburn Dam Overlook. Funny that we still call it the dam overlook even though they long ago decided not to put the dam in. So now you overlook the trenching done before they stopped. But it also has good views of the Sierras and the American River. We followed up the hike with a late lunch at Katrina’s.
Meanwhile, we continue our Tuesdays at the movies. Manchester by the Sea, Passengers, Rogue One and A Dog’s Purpose. Hawkinsons met us for the last one, following up with a chat at Starbucks.
The kids came for 2 craft project days. We made snowmen, practicing on blocks of wood before making one out of a Hershey's chocolate bar. The second time we made snowmen out of paper plates for a penny toss. The kids came over for a few hours while their parents went birthday shopping for Max. I taught them how to play Spider Solitaire and we had them on separate computers having a ball. Karissa also came for a sick day, trying to get rid of a stubborn cold/cough. I think it helped. We even had a few days with Princess, Ry and Beth’s dog. He needed to get out of the way while new carpeting was laid.
This month was Karissa’s date. We went to Art Beast in downtown Sacramento. Most kids were already back in school from Christmas vacation, so it wasn’t very crowded. She had fun working with clay, playing in the outdoor kitchen and in the numerous playrooms. We followed it up at the Black Bear Diner for mac and cheese.
Rog cashed in on his acupuncture coupon from Christmas. Seems to have helped the arthritis in his toes as well as some pain in his shoulder from his aikido rolls. We also finally went back to Janine (the audiologist who bought Placer Speech and Hearing 20 years ago) and Rog is trying a set of hearing aids. He is a dream patient...has been wearing them nonstop and is having absolutely no problems. He has tolerated the movies, was able to hear the waitress in a noisy restaurant and does better with TV.
Project-wise, Rog made shelves for the sides of our bed and has started to make a cabinet for the van. I have been struggling trying to decide what we needed for additional seating in the living room. I looked into loveseats and then decided 2 chairs would work better. We brought out the 2 chairs from the bedroom to see how they looked and liked it so much we are now looking for new chairs for the bedroom instead. I cleaned up the chairs and Scotchguarded them so they look pretty good. Hard to believe they are 20 years old.
