There was unexpected rain that turned our back yard project into a mudhole so we busied ourselves with a different project this month. The rear taillight on Tess had burned out and needed to be changed. Unfortunately, this has to be done from the interior of the van which required us to remove the cabinetry from the back so that we could access it. As long as we were going to all of that trouble, Rog decided to replace the countertop and swap out the cooktop for a two burner version. We priced the countertops at a local cabinet shop and were shocked at the $5K bid. Instead, we went to our local ReStore and found a huge piece of white Corian for $75 and Rog cut and fit it himself. It turned out fabulous and we are really happy with it. We got the tail lights all replaced and the cabinets reinstalled. Now all that is left for Tess is new blinds. That will be a while.
Max had a Court of Honor and we attended and watched him get 4 merit badges. He has also finished his Life requirements and is waiting for his review.
We held off on Karissa’s May date until the beginning of June. We went to the Sacramento Historical Model Railroad Club headquarters. This time, we ate locally at Pizzaiolini before we went. The club was running the trains this time as well, but they were a bit disorganized and couldn’t get their DCC system to work. Oh well. Karissa enjoyed looking for all of the off-the-wall items hidden on the layout. Afterwards, we stopped at Nugget for a dessert treat.
For Max's date, we drove to Black Chasm Caverns about 1.5 hours from here. Amazing that these caverns are as close as they are and we have never gone to see them! I surprised myself with handling the five flights of stairs and it was well worth it. The tour guide was enegetic and informative and we thoroughly enjoyed the visit. Now we all want to go back to see the California Caverns just a little further down the road. We took a small hike after our tour and then went to have lunch in town at Giant Burger. We also hit the local ice cream shop for some homemade calories. Fun day!
We had planned on a rendezvous with a friend from the past, Mike Bunch and his wife Kathy, at Lake Tahoe. Mike had planned a special anniversary lake cruise for his bride and we were going to join him and have dinner together. Unfortunately, Kathy became ill the day before they were due and they had to return home to Arizona. Rog and I had reservations at Bliss State Park so we went anyway and collected items and pics of Emerald Bay, literally sending a bit of Tahoe to them.
When we got back, we got to have the grandkids for an overnight and then all went to have Father’s Day breakfast with Michelle. Eric had flown south to spend time with his father, but Pops got a little pampering. After breakfast, Michelle had to go to work so we took the kids for an early Father’s Day lunch/dinner at Ryan’s. Rog had a great no-keto day:)
For over twenty years, Rog has been satisfied with being Nidan in shotokan karate. That is second degree black belt. He figured he was getting too old, bad back, less energy…. Not to mention 8 years of cruising that severely limited his training. The testing for black belt occurs at the end of three days of intensive workouts. It has been 20 years since he has attended the SKA special training. But since we got back from the boat, he has done some serious training; adding aikido 3 x week, studying podcasts and You Tubes, reading, and continuing with his 3 x week SKA training. He decided that he just might be able to get his third degree black belt. But in order to test, he needed to know if he could make it through a special training. So he set his goal for testing in 2020 and attended the training this year to see if he could make it through. Well, I think he surprised everyone, including himself, at how well he did. I expected him to get home Sunday night totally exhausted, but instead he was wired and excited. I finally dragged him to bed at 10:30. Needless to say, he is ready for 2020 and raring to go.
I knew that his body would need to recuperate after the SKA weekend, so I took a trial of STARZ and we binged on Outlander for the week. We saw all of the 4th season, then went back to rewatch seasons 1-3. Great way to chill out for a week!
The grandkids had a craft day and I decided to keep it healthy. I bought veggies and some cutters and then sliced a bunch of them and showed the kids 4 different ways to make flowers with them. Then they went at it and made some great originals!!!
We ended the month taking care of Scout while the Blooms took a trip to the Redwoods around Mariposa.
